The WhatsApp API, officially the WhatsApp Business Platform, is how a business sends WhatsApp messages from its own systems instead of a phone: from the store, the order system or a marketing platform such as Nonito. You do not download it. You get it through a Meta business portfolio and an approved solution provider, and you start conversations with templates Meta has reviewed. Meta charges for each delivered template message: in the UAE, AED 0.2115 ($0.0576) for a marketing message and AED 0.0576 ($0.0157) for an order or shipping update.
What is the WhatsApp API?
It is a programming interface that Meta hosts on its own servers (the Cloud API). Your system connects a WhatsApp number that belongs to your business, then sends messages and receives replies automatically, with nobody holding a phone. People also call it the WhatsApp Business API or the WhatsApp Cloud API. They all mean the same product.
The idea is simple. Your store knows when an order is placed, when it ships and when a customer leaves a cart. The WhatsApp API turns each of those moments into a message that arrives on time, in the customer’s language, with buttons they can answer with one tap.
WhatsApp API or the WhatsApp Business app?
| WhatsApp Business app | WhatsApp API | |
|---|---|---|
| Who sends | You or a teammate, from the phone or devices linked to it | Your system or platform, automatically, with several teammates replying from one inbox |
| Messaging customers first | Broadcast lists that only reach people who saved your number, 256 contacts a list | Meta-approved templates that reach any customer who agreed to hear from you |
| Connection to your store | None. Messages are typed by hand | Every order, shipment or abandoned cart can start a message |
| Buttons and automation | Quick replies and a simple greeting | Reply buttons that decide the next step, and journeys of several messages |
| Cost | The app is free | Meta charges per delivered template message, by category and country |
The app is not the wrong choice. It is built for conversations a person runs. The trouble starts when conversations turn into operations: dozens of orders a day that need confirming, customers asking where their parcel is, and abandoned carts nobody follows up. When does your business need the WhatsApp API?
- You confirm cash-on-delivery orders by hand. If your team calls or messages every order before packing it, a confirmation with two buttons (“Confirm” and “Cancel”) does the same job the moment the order arrives. Read the COD order confirmation guide.
- Customers leave carts and do not come back. You cannot follow up abandoned carts from a phone, because the phone never hears about them. The API knows the moment one happens.
- More than one person answers customers. The app is tied to one phone. The API gives you a shared inbox and a history for every customer.
- You want to reach people who have not saved your number. The app’s broadcast lists do not reach them. Approved templates do, as long as the customer agreed to hear from you.
- You want to know which message brought in which order. When you send from a platform connected to your store, each order is attributed to the message before it.
If you sell a little and answer every message yourself, the app is enough for now. Move to the API when answering by hand is what slows your orders down.
How to get the WhatsApp API
- Create a Meta business portfolioIn Meta Business Suite, with the legal name and address exactly as on your trade licence. This is the portfolio you verify later.
- Pick a solution provider, or a platform that works with oneMeta approves Business Solution Providers that connect businesses to the API. You can sign with one directly and build the connection yourself, or use a platform such as Nonito that handles the setup and the connection to your store.
- Register your number and display nameYou create a WhatsApp Business account and register a number on it. The display name is what customers see, and it has to match your business or brand name.
- Submit your templates for reviewEvery message that opens a conversation, such as an order confirmation, a shipping update or an offer, is a template Meta reviews, usually within 24 hours. Read why templates get rejected and how to fix them.
- Start sending, then verify your businessEvery account starts at 250 unique customers in 24 hours outside the customer service window. Business verification lifts that to 2,000, and it scales automatically from there. Read WhatsApp business verification and WhatsApp messaging limits.
Templates and the 24-hour window
When a customer messages you, a 24-hour customer service window opens and you can reply freely inside it. Outside that window, a conversation can only start with an approved template. Meta sorts templates into three categories: marketing (offers and abandoned carts), utility (order and shipping updates) and authentication (one-time codes). The category sets the price.
What the WhatsApp API costs in the UAE
Meta charges for each template message delivered to a customer. The price depends on the template’s category and on the country code of the customer’s number, not where your business is. For +971 numbers Meta publishes its own rate card in dirhams. These are its list rates, effective 2026-10-01 and checked 2026-10-11:
| Category | Price per delivered message (UAE) |
|---|---|
| Marketing | AED 0.2115 ($0.0576) |
| Utility | AED 0.0576 ($0.0157) |
| Authentication | AED 0.0576 ($0.0157) |
| Service (outside the free allowance) | AED 0.0576 ($0.0157) |
| A sample month: 10,000 marketing messages, 10,000 order and shipping updates and 3,000 customer service replies from one number | AED 2,806.20 ($764.40) |
- Messages customers send you are free, and so are messages that are not delivered.
- The first 1,000 customer service messages a month on each number are free.
- Replies to a customer who came from a click-to-WhatsApp ad are free for up to 7 days.
- Utility and authentication messages get cheaper per message as your monthly volume grows.
These are Meta’s fees alone. A provider or platform may add its own. For volume tiers and a calculator, open WhatsApp Business API pricing in the UAE, or compare every country on the WhatsApp Business API pricing page.
What Nonito costs
- Spark, $49 a month: flows and functional WhatsApp messages (order, shipping and payment updates) from the Nonito sender, so you can start without your own WhatsApp Business account. 1,000 functional messages included.
- Growth, $129 a month: your own WhatsApp number, marketing messages, the shared inbox and pop-ups that collect WhatsApp numbers. 5,000 functional messages included.
- Messages beyond the plan allowance are billed per message on your Nonito bill, so there is no separate WhatsApp provider to pay.
Plan prices are in US dollars and exclude VAT. Message rates and the free plan are on the pricing page.
How Nonito uses the WhatsApp API with Shopify and Odoo
Nonito sets up your WhatsApp Business number, gets your first templates approved, then ties every message to what actually happens in your store.
- Shopify: new orders, abandoned checkouts, shipping, cancellations, refunds and back-in-stock. Each event can start a WhatsApp journey. Read about the Shopify integration.
- Odoo: Nitro, Nonito’s enterprise platform, sends eight Odoo events as they happen: order created, updated, packed, dispatched, delivered and cancelled, and customer created and updated. Nonito reads them to start messages; nothing is written back to Odoo. Read about the Odoo integration.
- Broadcasts to a segment, such as everyone who bought in the last 90 days, from approved marketing templates. See WhatsApp broadcast.
- One shared inbox for every reply, so the whole team answers from the same place. See WhatsApp CRM.
- In Arabic and English. If a customer is not on WhatsApp, the same journey can continue by SMS or email.
- Every order is attributed to the message that brought it in, and tracked links are free on every plan.
Start with one journey, usually order confirmation or the abandoned cart, then add the rest. Ready-made journeys in Arabic and English are in the flow library. Selling in the UAE? See WhatsApp marketing in the UAE.
Frequently asked questions
Is the WhatsApp API the same as the WhatsApp Business API?
Yes. WhatsApp API, WhatsApp Business API and WhatsApp Cloud API are common names for the same product, officially the WhatsApp Business Platform. The WhatsApp Business app is a different product: a free app on your phone.
Is the WhatsApp API free?
No. Meta charges for each delivered template message. Messages customers send you are free, the first 1,000 customer service messages a month on each number are free, and replies to customers from click-to-WhatsApp ads are free for up to 7 days.
How much does a WhatsApp API message cost in the UAE?
AED 0.2115 ($0.0576) for a marketing message and AED 0.0576 ($0.0157) for a utility, authentication or customer service message, on Meta’s AED rate card effective 2026-10-01. Utility and authentication get cheaper at higher monthly volumes.
How much does Nonito cost?
Spark is $49 a month and Growth, which adds your own WhatsApp number, marketing messages and the shared inbox, is $129 a month, excluding VAT. Messages beyond the plan allowance are billed per message on your Nonito bill.
Do I need a developer to use the WhatsApp API?
If you connect to the API yourself, yes. With a platform connected to your store, such as Nonito, you build messages and journeys from the dashboard, and they send on every order or shipment.
Can I message customers who have not saved my number?
Yes, with a Meta-approved template, as long as the customer agreed to receive your WhatsApp messages, for example at checkout. That is a WhatsApp Business policy requirement, and it is also what keeps your number’s quality high.
